Prep to be available on the NHS in England from September

In a move that is billed as a Game Changer, Prep will be available on the NHS from September. Prep (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a daily pill that users can take to disable HIV. In clinical trials it showed an 86% chance of reducing the risk of being infected. The drug will be given approximately 10,000 people across England in a three year trial costing £10m.

From next month, Sexual health clinics in London, Manchester, Brighton, Liverpool and Sheffield are expected to be the first to offer Prep to high-risk people. It will be available in the rest of the country from April 2018.

New Gay Club to open up in Vauxhall

Finally after many years of decline in the number of gay venues in London, Vauxhall is to get a new gay club. Wayne Shires, who has in the past owned Area and The Cock is set to launch a new club called Bloc South at 65 Albert Embankment in Vauxhall. Bloc South will be a sister club to the already established and popular East Bloc near Old Street. This will be a very welcome addition the the London Gay Scene.

Despite initial opposition, there was strong support from residents in Lambeth as well as Lord Brian Paddick, and finally the Lambeth licensing sub-committee agreed to make an exception to the council’s regulations which sees that new nightclubs must close by 2am. Bloc South is expected to be a operating 7 days a week and be open until 5.30am on both Friday and Saturday nights.

Bloc South is anticipated to open in March.
